CB7Cu-1 (17-4 PH) Propeller Shaft Coupling
ASTM A747 CB7Cu-1 / UNS J92180 (17-4 PH). 0.47–7.23 kg across 5 catalogued sizes.
The Propeller Shaft Coupling is supplied as an investment casting in CB7Cu-1 (17-4 PH) (ASTM A747 CB7Cu-1 / UNS J92180 (17-4 PH)). In this grade the 5 catalogued sizes weigh 0.47 to 7.23 kg as cast, before machining allowance. High strength with usable corrosion resistance. Standard for surgical instruments and highly loaded fittings.

Why CB7Cu-1 (17-4 PH) for a propeller shaft coupling
- Seawater service
- Permanent seawater exposure is the governing condition here. Between CF8 and CF8M, depending on ageing condition; H1150 is more corrosion resistant than H900. Crevice conditions — under a gasket, inside a threaded joint, beneath a deposit — are harsher than open flow, so specify against the worst place on the part rather than the average.
- Rotating duty
- The part is balanced after the bore and hub face are machined, because those are the datums the balance is measured against. Grade choice affects this through density: a change of alloy changes the mass and therefore the residual unbalance for the same geometry.
- Fabrication
- Machinability: good in condition A, harder after ageing. Weldability: good, with re-solution and re-age. Both change the finished cost as much as the metal price does, and neither shows up on a materials comparison table.
Casting Weight in CB7Cu-1 (17-4 PH)
As-cast weight per size, before machining allowance, scaled from the alloy density. Gates and risers are additional and are not part of the finished-part weight.

Alternatives to CB7Cu-1 (17-4 PH) for This Part
The question is rarely "tell me about this grade" — it is "this grade, or something else?". These are the other grades this part is legitimately cast in.
| Grade | Specification | Corrosion | Temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| CA6NM | ASTM A743 CA6NM / UNS J91540 | Moderate — better than carbon steel in water, well short of CF8M in chlorides. | approx. -73 C to +370 C |
| CF8M | ASTM A351 CF8M / UNS J92900 (cast 316) | Good pitting and crevice resistance in chlorides; standard choice for seawater-adjacent and chemical process duty. | approx. -196 C to +550 C, derated for pressure-retaining service above 425 C |
| CF3M | ASTM A351 CF3M / UNS J92800 (cast 316L) | As CF8M, with the low carbon that prevents sensitization at welds. | approx. -196 C to +425 C |
| CD3MN (2205) | ASTM A890 Gr 4A / UNS J92205 (cast 2205 duplex) | Substantially better than CF8M against chloride pitting and stress-corrosion cracking. | approx. -50 C to +280 C — the upper limit is set by 475 C embrittlement, not by strength |
| CE3MN (2507) | ASTM A890 Gr 5A / UNS J93404 (cast 2507 super duplex) | Excellent — PREN above 40, suitable for warm seawater and desalination brine. | approx. -50 C to +280 C |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is CB7Cu-1 (17-4 PH) the right grade for a propeller shaft coupling?
High strength with usable corrosion resistance. Standard for surgical instruments and highly loaded fittings. Between CF8 and CF8M, depending on ageing condition; H1150 is more corrosion resistant than H900. Approx. -73 C to +316 C.
What does a propeller shaft coupling weigh in CB7Cu-1 (17-4 PH)?
Between 0.47 kg and 7.23 kg as cast across the 5 catalogued sizes, before machining allowance. The figure scales with the alloy density, so the same geometry in a different grade weighs proportionally more or less — which is why the weight is stated per grade rather than once for the part.
Can a propeller shaft coupling in CB7Cu-1 (17-4 PH) be welded or machined?
Machinability: good in condition A, harder after ageing. Weldability: good, with re-solution and re-age. Both affect the finished cost as much as the metal price does, so state the machining scope on the RFQ rather than leaving it to be discovered.
How do I request a quotation?
Configure the drawing on this page — size, alloy, finish — and submit the form. Attaching a drawing or a STEP file is the fastest route to a firm price, and it lets us flag a castability issue before you commit to tooling.
More on the Propeller Shaft Coupling
The full record for the propeller shaft coupling — every catalogued size, the parametric drawing and the quote form — is on the Propeller Shaft Coupling product page.
Each grade changes the price, the weight and what the part survives, so there is a page per grade for this part: CA6NM (the catalog grade), CD3MN (2205) (roughly double the yield strength), Inconel 625 (CW6MC) (where duplex is not enough), C95800 Nickel Aluminum Bronze (the marine bronze), Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) (half the density, seawater immune) and CF8M (the chloride-resistant default).
How it is shelled decides the tolerance and the surface you get, and the tolerance band is worked out against this part's own dimensions on each: Silica Sol Casting (DCTG 5 – 7, Ra 3.2 – 6.3 µm), Water Glass Casting (DCTG 7 – 9, Ra 6.3 – 12.5 µm) and Composite Shell Casting (DCTG 6 – 8, Ra 6.3 – 12.5 µm).
The specification and the testing change by sector more than the geometry does, so the propeller shaft coupling is written up separately for Marine & Offshore, Oil & Gas and General Machinery.
If the question is still whether a casting is the right way to make this part at all, the Propeller Shaft Coupling application guide covers where it is used, what has to be decided before a price exists, and where investment casting is the wrong answer.
