Why CF8 for a food machinery impeller
- Hygienic design
- Wetted surfaces are ground and polished to Ra 0.8 µm or better and passivated to ASTM A967. The as-cast surface will not pass a hygienic-design audit, so the finish is part of the specification rather than an option on it.
- Rotating duty
- The part is balanced after the bore and hub face are machined, because those are the datums the balance is measured against. Grade choice affects this through density: a change of alloy changes the mass and therefore the residual unbalance for the same geometry.
- Fabrication
- Machinability: fair. Weldability: excellent. Both change the finished cost as much as the metal price does, and neither shows up on a materials comparison table.
